How to Build a Dream Board that will Help You Make More Money

"Do you want to make more money? Sure, we all do."

As I write this post, I have been watching O.J.: Made in America for over seven hours this "Presidents' Day" weekend. It's a compelling film. It's also very long.

How does this relate to making money through your Dream Board?

Well, in the documentary, Mr. Simpson decides to make money from his jail cell by writing autographs and having his management team sell his signed products to fans. He made over $3 million signing football cards while incarcerated so that he could fund his $50,000 per day defense team for his murder trial.

Then, after the civil case against him was ruled, Mr. Simpson had his family and associates hide his assets so that the court could not sell them to pay off his debt.

Most of you Dreamers (I hope) are not currently in the same situation as Mr. Simpson. Yet, we can draw lessons from his actions:

1. Make a money plan to generate multiple streams of income. Before his arrest, Mr. Simpson was not only a ex-NFL player with a pension working as a professional football commentator, he also worked as a spokesperson for #1 national brands, owned Hertz dealerships as well as a stake in Honeybaked Ham, and acted in television and film. How can you use your day job and develop a side hustle to fund the lifestyle you want?

2. Make a money plan to invest your income. Mr. Simpson sunk a lot of money into possessions, like cars, clothing, shoes, and his home, which was demolished after the civil trial. Instead of following his lead, explore more financially sound options to place your money. Start with a checking account and a savings account at a bank or a credit union near you. If you have debt, investigate how to pay it off. Then, prepare for your future with an emergency fund, a 401k and/or a Roth IRA, and a separate investment account (I like a money market account and ETFs to start off with).  I'm not a financial advisor, but both Suze Orman and Victor Antonio are, so read the extensive media they have written and produced about how to get your money right.

"People first, then money, then things. Now you stay safe."

3. Select One Thing that you would like to work towards and spend money on this year as an investment in yourself. Mr. Simpson poured money into his defense team so that he could save his own life. What is One Thing that would make your life better this year?

4. Put it on your Board. I doubt Mr. Simpson made a Dream Board, but you can make one! Find pictures to represent what you want out of your financial life, and put them on your Board.

5. Tell a friend. Mr. Simpson always had a cadre of associates around him to do his bidding. I don't suggest that you gather randoms around you in a similar fashion. But I do suggest that you find someone you can trust, show them the Money (!) pictures on your Board, and share your plan with them. Telling someone else makes it real.

If you have put your Money dreams on Dream Board, or you are in the process of creating them, and you would like to talk about them here, please email me at iHaveADreamBoard@gmail.com.
